The best of Britain prepare to take on the world in Glasgow

Tuesday 01 August 2017

It’s August, which means it’s less than three weeks to go until the best in the badminton world descend on Glasgow for the Total BWF Badminton World Championships.

As the clock ticks down to the opening day’s play at Emirates Arena, ticket sales continue to grow with finals day proving particularly popular.

The tournament runs from August 21-27, with preliminary matches taking place in the first three days, before the round of 16 gets going on Thursday, August 24.

The three remaining days see the quarter, semi and finals being played, as the arena focusses its attention from five courts to just one for the last two days of action.

Top players from around the world will fight it out for the right to be called World Champion for an entire year, in what will be Glasgow’s second BWF World Championships having hosted the event 20 years ago in 1997.

And Scotland’s top player, double European silver medallist Kirsty Gilmour, cannot wait to get going in Glasgow.

“I feel spoiled that in my career so far I have managed to experience a Commonwealth Games and now a World Championships in my home city. It's what every athlete dreams about and I get it twice,” said the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth silver medallist.

“I'm proud every time I pull on my Scotland top but even more so when I'm surrounded by people who are in my corner and willing me to win. Scotland fans are the best and I want to do them proud every single time I play.”

And for England’s 2017 European champions, Rajiv Ouseph and Chris and Gabby Adcock, the possibility of doing the continental and global double in the same year is a motivating factor.

“Doing well at the Europeans was a big boost. It was a great experience, especially in Denmark it’s a tough thing to do so I can take confidence from that,” said European men’s singles champion Ouseph.

“It will hopefully stand me in good stead for Glasgow.”

With mixed doubles champion Chris Adcock adding: “You can rely on how the year’s been going if it’s been a good year, and you know that if you are up there in the world, you just need to keep doing your thing and hopefully it comes together on the day.”

So don’t miss out, get your tickets today and witness the best the badminton world has to offer.
